The Wait

Hi, I'm Stormy and this is my first triptych project done for my Digital Media class. Each panel took about 2-3 hours in photoshop and I'm very pleased with how they turned out. The last panel could use some editing, but that the only real issue I see with this piece. Half the images I used were images from a old philosophy book called Tao Te Ching, while the other half was composed of black and white photos from Google. I used a few actual objects, like a necklace and flowers; I love how they blend in so well with the rest of the image.

What I tried to convey in this piece is beauty through the passage of time, how life is still a wondrous phenomenon even as you age. The first panel represents how when your younger, people have a certain innocence and they look at the world as something strange and new. The middle piece, conveys how time affects everything and how people go through this process of aging, and yet still find beauty in some part of their lives. The last one, is supposed to represent more of the beauty of wisdom, how people lose a little of the innocent but later gain real insight on the world. The text is somewhat ambiguous and could mean a lot of things; what it means to me, though is that the people who live through the hardships of life and live through it are in a way rewarded by just the cosmic beauty of time. While I like my interpretation, I also would like other opinions about the piece. Leave a comment please.

  1. I really enjoyed the thought behind this piece because it seems opposite of my own. I thought the idea of time passing and the beauty continuously seen was very complementary to my triptych about time and chaos. I thought it was interesting that you chose to show the images in black and white although the theme is of beauty and brilliance. I, personally, love this artistic decision because I don't believe I would have looked as closely to the pictures individually or as an entire image if it was in color. Is this why you chose the black and white?

  2. The way I kind of interpreted your piece is that through time we still remain human no matter how much we try to cheat death and that over time we will eventually die. I interpreted the words "For all time" as a meaning for how time will never stop ticking. That it will keep on making us age no matter how much we want to stop. However,I think that it is the beauty of life that we go through this cycle of living and dying, and I see that through the eyes of the people that you also have in this piece that look like they are accepting this fate without any regrets.

  4. I like this triptych. The use of black and white is effective, the number, quality and definition of the figures is pleasing and the textures are somehow enhanced to the point of being noticeable. One senses one is looking at jewelry. I also like the complex borders of the various objects, and the generous use of negative space. The two heads of the flanking panels are striking and set off nicely against the clock in the central panel. The use of text is sparing and effective. Very good effort.

  5. Its obvious you put in the time to accomplish this assignment and it shows in the end result. Off the cusp, I receive a very vintage feel from the images from the slightly washed-in hues of the black and white. I might reference source material such as the film "Its a Wonderful Life" when analyzing how time morphs us in the end in relation to this piece. There is a clear narrative between the woman's face and how it ends up. There is not a pixel of unused space in the three panels. Everything is there for a reason, whether that be personal (reference to the Tao Te Ching in your statement) or in relation to the concept. My only irk deals with outside matters of the assignment. You were dangerously close to not finishing on time! I would be aware of time management and creating projects that can be finished within the allotted time. But you finished this just in time, and it turned out very interesting, so kudos. Keep it up!
